Choosing New MattressWhen it comes to choosing a new mattress for your bedstead, there are a few things you have to take into consideration.

Support (provided by the internal spring unit) and Comfort (provided by the padding). The spring unit supports your body frame, while the comfort system conforms to your body’s shape, cushioning it from the spring unit.

Orthopedic experts generally recommend you go for the firmest support (not the “hardest”; but most supportive) that you find comfortable.

Price and Quality. Often, the quality of the springs and the padding improves with price. Some big-name brands spend a lot on research and development and this cost is built into the price.

It’s difficult to compare prices as it’s difficult to find identical models. You can’t tell much about mattress quality by its looks. Knowledgeable and helpful sales people can be useful. If you don’t find either of these, go elsewhere.

Warranty. A long warranty is no guarantee of durability. A warranty should indicate that the manufacturer is willing to fix faults in design, materials and construction for a stated number of years.

Return Policy. Make sure you can return the mattress if it’s not as comfortable as you expected. You may be charged for recovering the mattress (for hygiene reasons) and return delivery costs.

Check if you get a refund or exchange the mattress for one of equal or greater value. It’s in the retailer’s interest to help you get the right mattress the first time round as returns may have to be sold at a discount.
