Visco Foam MattressNever walk into a store looking for a new bed until you have completely familiarized yourself with what is available on the market. If you are not educated about the types of mattresses currently being sold and the general price ranges for each, you can easily spend way too much on a discount mattress that doesn’t include the materials you really want.

Innersprings. This is the type of mattress everyone is familiar with. It has metal coils or springs surrounded by comforting and supportive materials.

The most basic models include cotton batting, but most models today will come with layers of foam. The exact materials included will often determine the price range of the mattress.

Pocketed Coils. They are becoming extremely popular today because they give a very plush, comforting feeling on the sleeping surface. Each metal coil is wrapped in its own pocket of material, rather than all of the coils being stuck together.

Memory Foams. There are quite a few different types of foams hitting the market, and some of the top brands have special names for their foam.

Visco-memory foam allows the mattress to conform to the shape of your body, essentially creating your shape in the foam. This is extremely comfortable and can help support your body.

How much you can expect to pay for a memory foam mattress depends on how much is actually included inside. Some models have a very small layer or only have it in certain “zones” while others will include thicker layers all across the mattress. The higher density foam mattress will be more comfortable, but is likely to cost more as well.

Latex Foams. This is another type of foam but it tends to be more expensive. You can purchase synthetic latex or all natural latex, with the natural version being more environmentally friendly and hypo-allergenic, but also more expensive.

You will find this as added layers in some mattresses or can purchase a solid core latex mattress for the ultimate in luxury and comfort.

All types of mattresses mentioned above can be found mixed together these days. Just remember when foam is involved that the price should only be higher if there is a solid foam core or higher density layers included.

Choosing New MattressBefore you rush into buying a new mattress for your bedstead, you should get to know the types of mattresses available in the market.

Spring. The comfort, support and durability of a mattress depend on the number of springs or coils, their shape, the gauge of wire used, the number of turns in each spring and the distribution of the springs.

Waterbeds. Make sure it’s full enough to give good body support. If you are not sleeping alone, look for a design that minimizes disturbance from movement. It’s cozy in cool weather and cool in warm weather.

Foam. High grade foam scores well for comfort and durability.

Latex. Natural rubber mattresses can be very expensive and also need an expensive flexible slat base. One made of good quality pure latex can be expected to last 20 to 25 years. This may be a good option for allergy sufferers because it’s less likely to harbor mould and dust mites.

Futon. This is basically a big cushion filled with fluffed-up cotton, wool or artificial fibers. It must be turned regularly to avoid mildew. It’s harder than most other mattresses and may better suit people with a light build as it won’t adapt to your curves and bumps so readily.

Memory Foam. Developed by NASA 30 years ago, it’s made from polyurethane. It “remembers” your shape for a while after you’ve moved – hence “memory foam”.
